Have you ever wondered what maize is? Maybe you've heard the word before, maybe you haven't. But a quick search lead you to the answer– it's just CORN!
When the settlers arrived in America they found maize everywhere. It has been in Mexico for over 4000 years and was a common staple for Native Americans. The settlers replaced the Native American term maize with the English word corn.
Before microwavable and stove-top popcorn was invented, Native Americans had a great way of making their own popcorn! They would skewer an ear of corn onto a long pointed stick and hold it over a fire, causing the corn to pop off everywhere. Another way would be to throw the kernels directly into the fire.
With a history dating back before America was even founded, it is clear to see why popcorn is one of America's favorite snack foods.
