Will it be a long winter or an early spring? Only the groundhog knows! February 2nd is Groundhog day, where the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil of Punxsutawney Pennsylvania takes the stage to determine if winter will persist for another 6 weeks. Folklore states that if the groundhog immerges from his burrow and sees its shadow, it will retreat in anticipation of a long winter. However, if the groundhog does not see his shadow, spring will come early to the United States.
This tradition dates back to the early 19th century and may have its roots in German lore. There are many different theories of were this tradition originated, but regardless, our furry little friend makes quite the weatherman.
